What awards mean to students, graduates

Alfea Donato, winner of the Del Bell Memorial Award for feature writing, says the cash component will allow her to pay rent, buy groceries, and take fewer shifts in her part-time job next term so she can do more reporting.

She was one of dozens of students, through every year of the RSJ undergraduate and master’s programs, who met with faculty, staff and donors at the Mattamy Athletic Centre on Nov. 24 for the 2013 RSJ awards banquet.

The Del Bell Award was established by Bell’s family and friends, who wish to reward others who share his passion for storytelling.

Donato’s also one of the winners who had a few words (see above) to say about the experiences at the RSJ that allowed them produce their award-winning work — and especially what the philanthropy means to them.
